A jury has just handed down an $11.3 million verdict to a disabled 7 year old girl and her parents, who sued Lawrence Hospital and two of its doctors. Only nine days after she was born in 2006, Katherine Munian was having trouble breathing and was brought to the hospital.
Yet, as Jordan Merson successfully showed, it took Lawrence Hospital staff several hours to even examine Katherine, while her parents were left helplessly watching as their daughter's condition worsened. The case also highlighted additional delays - it took another two days to finally diagnose the heart defect that had been present since birth. While emergency surgery elsewhere managed to save Katherine's life, she was left with permanent brain damage that changed both her and her parents lives.
